    The water industry recently has seen considerable innovations in freshwater supply, water conservation, and water reuse technologies due to the concern for saving potable, or “blue,” water. Large companies are looking at their global water footprints to see how they can reduce water consumption; thus, water technology has become a major new investment opportunity. How can plumbing engineers get involved? This article discusses some of these new technologies to urban water conservation and efficiency, including desalination, membrane technology, storm water management and treatment, water-quality monitoring, on-site wastewater reclamation, disinfection of water, irrigation automation, and cooling tower water-use efficiency.

    One of the fundamental design elements that every plumbing engineer faces is the design of domestic water systems, so this article outlines a methodology plumbing engineers can use to design an efficient domestic water system. To do so, it walks through the design process for a relatively large, multistory building, which will allow readers to look at all elements of the design of a domestic water system, including gathering preliminary information, determining whether a water booster pump is needed, locating water heaters, and sizing and laying out the piping distribution network.
