New Graphic Designer Joins ASPE Staff Brian Stafford started this week as ASPE’s new graphic designer. He attended M.A.T.C. in Madison, Wisconsin, for commercial art and architectural drafting and completed an associate’s degree at Al Collins School of Design in Tempe, Arizona. Brian previously worked at the Academy of General Dentistry and the American Academy of Dermatology, specializing in publications and illustration. At ASPE he will be responsible for designing PS&D magazine, creating marketing materials, laying out publications, and other design-related tasks. You can contact Brian at bstafford@aspe.org.

Chicago Product Show Scheduled for April 16 The Chicago Chapter’s Product Show is being held at the White Eagle Restaurant in Niles, Illinois. Technical seminars will run from 11:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., and the product show runs from 3:30 to 8 p.m. More than 500 products will be displayed in over 90 exhibits. INDUSTRY NEWS Consortium to Advise DOE on High-performance Green Building Issues Ten industry organizations have formed the High-Performance Commercial Green Building Partnership in response to the U.S. Department of Energy’s request for consortia to advise on high-performance building issues. Members include ASHRAE; Air-conditioning, Heating, and Refrigeration Institute; AIA; Alliance to Save Energy; Building Owners and Managers Association; ICC; Illuminating Engineering Society of North America; National Association of State Energy Officials; National Electrical Manufacturers Association; and USGBC.
Plumbing Trade Associations Form Water-efficiency Research Coalition IAPMO, Alliance for Water Efficiency, ICC, PHCC, and PMI have signed a memorandum of understanding to form a Water-efficiency Research Coalition to find common ground to share technical, scientific, legislative, and regulatory information that will result in an organized and systematic approach towards the development of comprehensive research programs. The goal of such research is the advancement of water-efficient and sustainable plumbing products, systems, and practices.
Standard 90.1-2004 Established as National Reference Standard by DOE States now must certify that their building codes meet the requirements in ASHRAE/IESNA (2004): Energy Standard for Buildings Except Low-Rise Residential Buildings under a ruling issued by the U.S. Department of Energy. The federal Energy Policy Act requires all states to certify that they have state energy codes in place that are at least as stringent as Standard 90.1 (2004) or justify why they cannot comply.
Comment Period Extended for IAPMO Solar and Swimming Pool Codes IAPMO is calling for all proposed changes to the Uniform Solar Energy Code and Uniform Swimming Pool, Spa, and Hot Tub Code for the 2009 edition of each. The updated versions will be published in November. The deadline for comments is Feb. 16 and May 20 respectively.
Portland Green Building Policy Open for Public Comment Portland, Oregon, has opened for public comment its proposed High-performance Green Building Policy, which proposes a green building “feebate,” a market-based instrument that combines a fee for conventional construction, a waiver option for moderate green improvements, and a reward for high-performance green building projects. New commercial construction projects larger than 20,000 square feet and multifamily construction larger than 5,000 square feet will be affected.

Grundfos Acquires Yeomans Chicago Corporation The Grundfos Group has acquired Yeomans Chicago Corp. of Aurora, Illinois, which specializes in pumps for wastewater. Yeomans operates mainly within the area of utility wastewater. In business for more than 110 years, Yeomans operations will become part of Grundfos North American operations and overseen by the Peerless group based in Indianapolis.
